HP-HT Bridge Plug.

The HPHT plug is a high performance retrievable bridge plug/packer for remedial workover applications in High Pressure/High Temperature wells. The plug development was originally requested by Statoil as a plug alternative for their HPHT wells in the Kristin/ Åsgard North Sea oil and gas fields.

The innovative seal design is based on two separate circular arrays consisting of small spring-loaded metal blocks. When the plug is set, these blocks will expand radially and form dense barriers that act as metal back up to the seal when forced against the casing wall. The metal blocks overlap, and a high temperature elastomer is placed in the centre of the arrays to ensure proper sealing in the overlap as the metal blocks expand.

A rugged anchor design allows loads in either direction, and the slips have a large contact area to minimise casing/tubing deformation or damage. Together with the packer module, the anchor will ensure the plug self-centralises on setting. On retrieval, the slips are positively pulled back from the casing/tubing wall to their running position.

The HPHT plug has been designed with a bore that will serve as an internal junk catcher when the tool is used as a bridge plug. Further junk extensions can be added at the bottom of the tool for increased displacement of well debris.

Retrieving the HPHT plug is a one-trip operation on slickline using an industry standard GS pulling tool. By straight upward pulling only there is no need for separate pressure equalising actions (downward movement, prongs etc), as the equalising assembly has been made an integrated part of the release mechanism.
