Permanent Pressure Gauge.

The Omega Permanent Pressure gauges are robust mechanical systems providing a surface readout of bottom hole pressure. Downhole pressure is transmitted to surface via a standard hydraulic control-line. As there are no electronic or electrical components, the Omega Permanent system has great application in harsher environments.

Downhole pressure acts on a piston (P1 System) or sleeve (S1 System) which in turn acts on hydraulic fluid in the control line. The pressure measured at surface is the bottom hole pressure less the known hydrostatic pressure of the hydraulic oil. The floating piston ensures the system compensates for temperature effects.

A pump through facility is incorporated to allow flushing of the hydraulic oil and to provide the functionality of chemical injection. Hydraulic oil retained in a control line will degrade with time resulting in inaccuracies in the system. To minimise such inaccuracy and to facilitate chemical injection, the facility exists to circulate fluid either to fresh oil or chemicals followed by fresh oil.

The Omega Permanent Pressure Gauge Systems feature 2 check valves and one injection valve to ensure integrity. Further to this, a metal-to-metal seal is achieved when the injection valve assembly bottoms out. As the final redundancy, a profile and seal bore exist inside the sub to allow the landing of an isolation sleeve.

The P1 and S1 Permanent Pressure systems provide a very low cost and robust alternative to the electrical/electronic systems commonly employed and will provide an accuracy of ±10 psi. A more accurate calibration may be obtained by lowering a quartz memory gauge to align with the permanent gauge. After adjusting for wellhead pressure at the time of the survey, the hydrostatic will be accurately known. Although developed specifically for the HPHT market, the many attributes make application in mainstream completions appealing.
